Menu-> Management -> Status -> Podcast Queue

This interface gives information about the enclosures waiting to be refreshed. The higher an enclosure is displayed on the list, the sooner the refresh manager will update it.

From this interface you can remove an enclosure from the Podcast Queue as well as force a “Download Now” of an enclosure.

12 - Settings :: Status Monitor

Menu-> Management -> Settings -> Status Monitor

The status monitor allows you to easily monitor your channel status and Hubdog. To enable the status monitor go to: Menu -> Management -> Settings -> Status Monitor

The status monitor shows the download process; i.e. The number of channels, podcasts and images to download as well as the download speed.

Some graphical icons will also tell you the status of Hubdog:

11 - Settings :: Internet Connection

Menu-> Management -> Settings -> Internet Connection

Windows Mobile devices provide multiple ways of connecting to the internet; Docked/USB/ActiveSync, Wifi, Bluetooth, cellular data connection at home or at the office.

Hubdog can use the different Internet connections for downloading (automatic channel updates & podcast downloads) depending on your preference. Since automatic podcast download option can be very bandwidth hungry, it’s preferable that the Hubdog application does not download while connected to a limited cellular data plan for example.

You have the flexibility to allow Hubdog to use or not each of your Internet connections.

What is an “Allowed connection”?
Hubdog will use allowed connections to keep channels up-to-date by downloading latest items and podcasts. Depending on your number of subscriptions and update intervals, Hubdog can consume a lot of bandwidth using an allowed connection, so be aware.

What is a “blocked connection”?
Hubdog never uses a blocked connection to update “My Channels” or in other words to refresh channels and download podcasts. However, a blocked connection still work for manual input; i.e. you can still access newest/most popular/suggested channels via a blocked connection. You are also still able to refresh a channel manually using a blocked connection.

10 - Settings :: General

Menu-> Management -> Settings -> General

This tab contains multiple key options for adapting Hubdog behavior to your personal needs and specific device.

Download location
Hubdog stores each text, image and podcast item on your device for offline usage. Main Storage memory of your device is precious and limited; therefore you should not use it to save Hubdog Data. This option allows you to select a storage card as your main download location for your Hubdog service. Storage card is the recommend download location for this option.

Minimum disk space to be kept free
If you subscribe to several channels, you may end-up rapidly with no free disk space on your device. Disk space shortage could disrupt other program behaviors and processes. Setting this option will ensure there is always free storage space left on your device’s disk, and insures all your programs run adequately. Selected % depends on your needs, if you are not sure, we recommend to set it to 10%.

Allow Adult Content
Some Hubdog channels are marked as containing adult content. If you keep this option unchecked, Hubdog will filter those channels and you will not see them on your device. This option is vital if you use Hubdog in a professional context. Please note that some channels may not have been marked as containing adult content yet. You may warn us by email (support@hubdog.com) if you notice any wrong classification of adult content channels.

Automatically download podcasts
Podcast (or item enclosures) are downloaded by default. If you uncheck this option, channels will always stay up-to-date but podcast enclosures will not be downloaded. (Checked Recommended)

Never hibernate when downloading
In Windows Mobile Power Settings, you can set your power scheme to turn-off after a few minutes. In this case, if Hubdog is refreshing channels, updating process will also stop. Check this option if you want to overwrite your Windows Mobile settings when Hubdog is refreshing your content. (Checked Recommended)

Playlist type
This setting is important to ensure playlist and streaming media works well with your installed media player.

If you use Windows Media Player as your main media player, we suggest you set it to ASX.
If you use another media player such as Core Player, we suggest you set it to PLS.

The recommended configuration is to use Core Player Media player with PLS selected for this option.

9 - Configuring your Hubdog

Settings

By clicking on the settings button, you can navigate through the different options to customize Hubdog to your own personal need and to your specific device.

General
Allows you to configure general settings of Hubdog.
For more information take a look at the “Settings :: General” section.

Download Threads
By default, Hubdog will download only 1 enclosure at a time. If you want Hubdog to download 2 or 3 enclosures simultaneously, change this setting.

Enlarge title bar
When navigating in the Item view, When the “My Channel”, or the “Channel” zone is selected, Hubdog will enlarge the title bar for easy access to the navigation arrow for the touch screens devices. Smartphone device can unselect this setting.

Status Monitor
The status monitor will give you helpful information about “My Channel” and Hubdog. For more information take a look at the “Settings :: Status Monitor” section.

Disk Space
The “Disk Space” interface will give you relevant information about the disk space size of every channel. Many options are available from this interface to manage efficiently your device disk space.

Internet Connection
Hubdog can block or allow different Internet connection. For example, if you want Hubdog to download content via Activesync but never with your GPRS connection, this interface will allow you to do so.
For more information take a look at the “Settings :: Internet Connection” section.

Today Screen
Hubdog comes with a Today Screen that allows you to view and read directly from the Windows Mobile Today screen. This interface will allow you to configure which channel should be shown on the today screen.
It is good to track new items in important channel.
Clicking on the today screen will automatically start Hubdog.

Install Today Plugin
To install the today screen click on this option and follow the onscreen steps.

8 - Adding Feeds and Discover new ones

ADDING FEEDS

Once you get the hang of Hubdog; you might want to add your own rss/atom/xml feeds from your favorite sites or import your OPML subscription list from another RSS Reader.

Adding a custom rss feed with an Url: Go to the “My Channels” list by clicking on the Channels button. Then click on Menu -> Action -> Create Channel. You will be prompt to enter your URL. If your feed is valid, Hubdog will ask for the folder where you want to create your channel.

Import OPML: To import an OPML into Hubdog, go to the “My Channels” list by clicking on the Channels button. Then click on Menu -> Action -> Import OPML from file if your OPML file resides on your device or Menu -> Action -> Import OPML from url if your OPML is hosted on the Internet.

DISCOVER GREAT CONTENT

Within Hubdog you can discover many other channels created by the Hubdog community.

The “Newest Channels” displays channels recently created by Hubdog user community. All user tastes and interests are represented in this section.

“Most Popular” section is very relevant since it shows most subscribed channels within Hubdog’s user community.

“Suggestions section” is a list of channel created by the Hubdog team based on user feedback. This Discover section provides a variety of news, entertainment and sports information. They are reviewed and modified on a regular basis.

You can open any of these public channels and add them to “My Channels” by subscribing with the Add button.

DISCOVER MORE GREAT CONTENT USING SEARCH

Search Hubdog community channels. When you add a feed to your account, you can make it public or private. If you make it public, your channel will be indexed and available for search by any Hubdog users. The search feature is a good way to discover more specific channels about precise topics that other users are subscribed to. To Search Hubdog’s channel, go to Menu -> Discover -> Search

7 - How to Navigate

There are 3 ways to navigate thru Hubdog:

Hardware Key Navigation
TouchScreen Navigation
Gesture Mode Navigation

The recommended way is to use the Hardware Key. It is pretty convenient and straightforward.

Let's begin by introducing the main view of Hubdog 2.0 and the different zone. We will use the following zone name to help you get started.

How to navigate using the Hardware Key

You can use Hubdog with only one hand using the Hardware (Recommended)

Once in the Item zone, you can press Left or Right to get to the previous or next item of the current channel. By pressing the down key, you will be able to scroll down inside your item.

If you press the Up key you will go to the Item Action zone. From there you can play or stream podcast, send the item to your blog or to an email recipient, browse the item web source and soon much more. Those actions are also available thru the right soft key menu in the Action Menu.

By pressing the Up key again, you will get to the Channel Zone. Hitting the Left or Right key will open the previous or next channel of your “My Channel” list. By pressing the Enter hardware key, the Table of Content of the current channel will be displayed. You can then navigate thru it and go directly to a specific item.

If you press the Up key again you will get to My Channels zone. Hubdog 2 allows you to create folder to organize your content. When folders have been created, pressing the Left or Right key will get you to the Previous or Next Folder. You can also bring up the Table of Content of your “My Channel” by pressing the Enter key within the Table of Content you can manage your Channels, i.e.; create folder, move channel, modify your channel settings and more.

2 more ways to navigate for Pocket PC

Touch screen navigation is pretty straightforward, most visual elements are clickable.

To navigate thru the item, click the Left or Right arrow in the Action Item Zone to go to previous or next Item. The Channel zone has 4 clickable elements; clicking on the left or right side will direct you to the previous or next channel of your Hub, clicking on the middle of the zone will show up the Table of content of the current channel. From the table of content, you can open an item by clicking and holding it, a context menu will be shown.

Gesture mode is an experimental navigation. By dragging your pen or your finger from left to right on the screen you will be able to read your news like a book, drag up and down to scroll the story.

6 - Item Visualization and Actions Buttons

Channel links to RSS feeds and are composed of multiple Items. When you open a channel via your “My Channels” list, you will see the first Item of this channel. This the main view to consume the channel.

Hubdog has several actions you can perform on a news Item within a channel, following is a list of Item Action:

Browse this item online: channel items sometimes provide only short text versions, click this button to read the full online versions. This action button will start your default internet browser and direct you to the source web page of the item.

Save As: this button appears when an item contains media files (movies, music, and pictures). It allows you to save these files on your pocket pc; ensuring you keep them for as long as you want. This is an important option since Hubdog cleans downloaded folders from time to time keeping only recently downloaded files.

Email to: send items to an email recipient. Useful option to share interesting items you discover on the go. This feature works online and offline. When emails are sent offline, they are kept in the Outbox (see Settings->tab Outbox), and are sent seamlessly next time your device connects to the internet.

Blog it: post any item from your mobile directly to your Blogger blog! “Blog it” feature also works offline; meaning that every post made offline is seamlessly added to your Blogger account once you go back online.

Stream: when podcast enclosures are not downloaded, a stream button is displayed. When you click this button, it acts as a progressive download allowing you to play your media file while downloading it. You need to be connected to the internet to use this button.

Play: plays the media enclosures in your installed Media Player.

Play: plays all download media from the current channel. When you press this button, Hubdog generates a playlist; if the Play button does not appear, it means there is no media available for this channel. Consult Setting to configure the type of playlist best suited for your media player.
Buy : If this icons appear, you are viewing a premium channel. Press it to view to available subscription plan and/or trials.

Failed Images : This will appear if some images are not yet downloaded on your current item. Click it to force the download.

Set as background : Display all of the images available from your channel and let you use them as a wallpaper.

5 - Action on a Folder

When a folder is selected, go to Menu -> Action to see actions you can perform on a folder.

Create Folder
Hubdog allows you to create folders to classify your channels. Select the appropriate folder where you want to create a subfolder and click on the “Create Folder” action.

Delete
If a folder is selected and the “Delete” action is press, Hubdog will delete the folder and move all the channels in the parent folder.

Rename Folder
Use this to rename an already created folder

Other actions are covered in the “Action on a Channel” section.

4 - Action on a Channel

From the “My Channels” interface, you will be able to manage your Channels and Subscriptions. By selecting a channel from the list and then pressing the “Menu” Button and then the “Action” submenu you will see all the different options you can manage via this interface. Following is a list of the different actions possible when a channel is selected:

Open
Will open the selected channel. The first item of the channel will be presented. Take a look at the “ITEM VISUALIZATION” section for more information.

Refresh Now
Hubdog will automatically refresh all channels periodically. But you can acquire the latest news from a channel immediately by clicking the “Refresh Now” action.

Number of Enclosure
By default, Hubdog will download the same number of Enclosure as the number of Items for a specific channel. If you want to reduce the number of enclosure Hubdog downloads but keeping the same number of Items, you can do it via this action. For more options, you can go to the “Advanced” option as well.

Move Channel
With Hubdog 2.0 you can create folders to classify your feeds. When folders are created, use this action to move your channel to another folder. Look at the “Folder Action” section for more details.

Unsubscribe
Use this action if you wish to suspend the refresh of a channel. Hubdog will not automatically refresh this channel anymore.

Delete
Use this action if you want to delete a channel from your channel list.

Create Channel
You can create a channel base on any kind of RSS feeds. You will be prompt to enter an URL for your new feed.

Import OPML from file
An OPML is a file that stores all your feeds for the purpose of exchanging your lists of RSS feeds between RSS aggregators. If your OPML is a file residing on your device, use this option to import all the feeds present in the OPML.

Import OPML from url
An OPML is a file that stores all your feeds for the purpose of exchanging your lists of RSS feeds between RSS aggregators. If your OPML is hosted online, use this option to import all the feeds present in the OPML.

Export OPML
You can export your Hubdog feeds list into an OPML. Use this option if you wish to generate an OPML file from your channel list.

Sync My Channels
Since Hubdog allows you to add feed directly from your device but also from the Hubdog website (www.hubdog.com) use this option to synchronize your channel list. Hubdog will also trig this action on a periodical basis.

Refresh All Channels
If you want Hubdog to trig immediately a refresh of your entire channel, use this action. Otherwise, Hubdog will do it on a periodical basis.

3 - My Channel View

After the completion of the First Use Wizard you will be directed to your channel subscription list, “My Channel”. If you have selected channels from the suggestions list or if you have imported an OPML, your channel will be listed in this interface.

If you have a valid Internet connection, Hubdog will proceed with the refresh (download) of all channels. A green check mark signifies that the Channel has been refreshed, a yellow check mark means that Hubdog is currently refreshing a channel and a red check mark means that the channel is not yet refreshed.

FAQ - i tried to instal hubdog via Windows Vista, but Vista has no Activesync..... So no installation possible? Can you provide the CAB directly?

In Windows Vista, activesync has been replace by Windows Mobile Device Center. FAQ - How can I download multiple Podcast simultaneously ? How can I download Faster ?

Increase the number of download thread,
Go to Menu ->management -> Settings -> Download Thread, and set it to 2 or 3.

*If your device is not very powerful, this may affect global performance specially when connected USB via ActiveSync.

FAQ - I would like all of my enclosures to be local, none of them to be online. Is there a way to do this?

Yes, ensure the following option is turn On.
Menu-Management-Settings-General-Automaticly download Podcast.

You can configure even more by setting the number of podcast to download for each individual channel.
In the Tree View listing your channels, select the channel to configure, Menu-Action-Number of Enclosure.

Yes, ensure the following option is turn off.

This homepage is not available anymore.
An improve homepage will be reintroduce in the next official release.

It was hard to support this homepage with the variety of screen form factor in the market.
Although, the options from this homepage are still accessible through the menu.
Fetch is only accessible from the web.

FAQ - Some podcasts open in TCPMP, but a few open in WMP !

If you open the podcast directly using the blue Play button , it will use the player associated with the file extension. This is a Windows setting, you can change those file associations settings in TCPMP. If you launch a playlist using the gree Play button , it will create a playlist with the file extensions as set in Menu-Management-Settings-General-Playlist Type. Ensure TCPMP or your Player is bind with the selected playlist type.

FAQ - What is the difference between refreshing channels and syncing channels?

Syncing channels only updates your Channels list. If you are adding channel online through our suggestion page for example, you might want to see them right away in your mobile. Sync will do that for you. You should not have to use this option often; Hubdog will ensure your mobile is always synced.

Refreshing Channels; Hubdog will go through each channel and will ensure you have the latest version cached on your device. You should not have to use this option often; Hubdog will ensure your channels are kept up-to-date periodically.

FAQ - What is the SAVE button for ?

Hubdog auto download files but also auto delete files after a while.
SAVE button is use to permanently save downloaded files.

If you press the save button while you had available only the Stream Button; meaning the file was not downloaded yet.
Hubdog will have to download it first before you can save it. Hubdog is now downloading this file and you will have to come back later to this item to save it permanently.

FAQ - Is Hubdog free or not"? If there are paid services, what are they?

Hubdog is free. A lot of channel are for free and you can subscribe to as many as you want.
You will sometime notice some premium or paid channel. You will be ask to put money in your account before subscribing to those channel. It will not be done automatically.
I hope this will free your mind, and you will be able to enjoy Hubdog to its fullest.

Most Popular section is very relevant since it shows most subscribed channels within Hubdog’s user community. From here, you can also subscribe to channels.

Another good way to discover great content is by clicking on the channel’s author name, this gives you access to all his public channels contained in his “My Hub”. Discover content from users with similar tastes and interests. (The author name is located under the channel name)
